This lesson is dedicated to the hi-hat open on upbeats, the second 8th note of a beat. The first step is the hi-hat played with the foot, like in the previous lesson #28, as a metronome.
To go further with this lesson you can play the etude "Reggae Jam" available at The Shop.
Let's start with quater notes. The first one is played with the foot, then release the cymbals and play with the stick for the open sound on the next beat.
Tempo = 60bpm ; count in = 1234
|1-+-2-+-3-+-4-+-||
HH |----o-------o---||
HP |x-------x-------||
Same exercice as before but in 8th notes this time : the first 8th is played with the foot the second is an open sound played with the stick.
Tempo = 60bpm ; count in = 1234
|1-+-2-+-3-+-4-+-||
HH |--o---o---o---o-||
HP |x---x---x---x---||
This time we play the 3 sounds of the hi-hat : with the foot, closed with the stick and open with the stick.
Tempo = 60bpm ; count in = 1234
|1-+-2-+-3-+-4-+-||
HH |----x-o-----x-o-||
HP |x-------x-------||
Now play the hi-hat with the foot same time you play the closed sound with the stick on the first 8th.
Tempo = 60bpm ; count in = 1234
|1-+-2-+-3-+-4-+-||
HH |x-o-x-o-x-o-x-o-||
HP |x---x---x---x---||
Exactly the same as exercise 4 but in its final printing version, we don't write the hi-hat foot anymore.
